Turo's Kitchen is fantastic. He offers a wide variety of interesting drinks, sandwiches, desserts, and other dishes including e.g. ratatouille. I've had a couple sandwiches and sampled a few other dishes and they were all great. Turo seems to have lots of experience and training as a chef, and is super friendly.
My girlfriend and I like to walk to Cortland Ave. on weekends and now I always want to stop in and get something from Turo. (Note: I think Turo takes Sundays off.)
I have passed by this place plenty of times and it always smells amazing but I'm usually in a rush and can't try it. Today during lunch I saw their specials board posted outside and decided to give it a try. I got BLTA sandwich on a sourdough roll. Turo crafted my sandwich with so much care and was easy to talk to. I appreciate how he asked me how I like my avocado cut and if I wanted some fresh lemon juice on my veggies. On the side there were strawberries, an orange slice and he even added a little cup of his own in-house mango habanero sauce. It was so beautiful I wish I took a picture but I couldn't wait to eat it! As I was paying he walked up and gave me a lemon cucumber water. Such a sweet man!
The store had a great range of products. I looked around while waiting for my sandwich and saw that they had a small but very fresh looking produce section in front. There's a good selection of healthier snacks as well.
In front of the deli there are chairs and tables to sit at while waiting for your order or to enjoy your food at. And they had a huge TV on top of the produce section where they were playing the World Cup!
I have lived in Bernal Heights my entire life and am glad I finally found this gem. Will definitely go back to try more of Turo's well crafted creations!
This was such a fantastic find! We ate at Turo's cafe inside the market -- Turo's the nicest guy and his selection of food, drinks and desserts is surprisingly varied. You can get fresh-squeezed watermelon juice or Brazilian lemonade (with condensed milk)... main dishes from ratatouille to chorizo fritters to chicken fajitas... or creative desserts like pina colada custard, or "galaxy cheesecake."
We got the Brazilian lemonade which was tangy and creamy, plus an amazing sandwich on toasted Dutch Crunch bread, stuffed to the brim with chicken, sausage, avocado, red onion, some kind of creamy dressing... I don't even remember everything in it, but it was the perfect messy blend of textures and flavors.
Turo also gave us some free banana fritters with berries, just to be nice. They were delicious too -- like mini banana pancakes, but with a more intense banana flavor.
We'll definitely be coming back.
Came in for cilantro, walked out with a delicious beet juice drink and spicy and flavorful tomatillo salsa. Turo, one of the owners is passionate about his products and wants to make his establishment a fixture in the Bernal heights area. Stop by for authentic Guatemalan cuisine! He also worked at Odwalla so makes his own sugar-free, natural juices. You won't be disappointed!
Y'all. I'm currently eating the best roast beef sandwich I've ever had. I stopped in just to grab something light (failed at that, by the way) and the people were so smiley, friendly, and warm. They even invited me to a bbq they're having at the market tomorrow for the Superbowl. This sandwich is more than enough food for two people, so be aware of that. Definitely stop by if you're in Bernal.
